More than a decade ago I tried to find a comet that could cause a doomsday in 2012. Because we didn’t know of one actually heading toward us, I looked at all the historical comets and tried to find on that could be returning, finally settling on Caesar’s Comet. While even NASA cannot predict the return of a long period comet with an accuracy or a day or even a decade, I’m pretty sure my initial guesses was wrong. But I haven’t given up on comets being the key to everything – history, human development, religion and potentially our demise.
My speculation is that the Younger Dryas Impact sparked religion and survivalism in the Mediterranean, as well as causing the destruction of Atlantis. That was 12,900 years ago, or 10,900 BC.
It is easy to simply say it might return one day, or it might not, and it doesn’t really matter (aside from the end of the world as we know it…). The history of mankind being the result of a meteor storm can be valid whether the comet is returning or not. Humans back then would still expect it to return, and would not have had the science to know if or when it actually would return.
Just like how 12,900 years ago was a turning point for humans (religion and agriculture began), we know that there was another turning point, just before the meteoric rise of ancient Egypt. Quite likely that was also triggered by a meteor storm and also floods. Potentially the same comet was the culprit.
There is evidence that the Burckle Crater near Madagascar is the result of such a storm, and that impact may have cause tsunamis and floods wherever the Indian Ocean meets land.
Various estimates for the resulting tsunami suggest that circa 3000 BC is a good fit. Given my history with the ancient Mayan calendar, and how unique it is, I will work with the 3,114 BC date that is the start of the Mayan Long Count Calendar. 3,150 BC was the unification of Ancient Egypt, and the Hindu Kali Yuga calendar began on 3,102 BC.
While the return of a long period comet is never the exact same time period each time, it would certainly be within 10% or so. Which means that back-of-the-envelope calculations give the date of the next visit to be around 4672 AD. Nothing for us to be worrying about!
Well, I suspect there is a religious-scientific order that is well aware of this and will still be around to warn/save us when that date comes.
